Tamar the Great’s fortress

In the western Georgia there is municipality Chokhatauri, there near village Bukistsikhe you can find a stronghold. Historians and archeologists discovered that it mentioned in Bronze age.
Stronghold had great strategic importance. Garrison stationed here had task to guard road form Imereti to Black sea.
Tamar the Great’s fortress was built on top of the hill so it had better defensive position. Time and great many battles brought a lot of destruction. Today only north-east part is relatively intact. One tall multilevel tower is still standing. It is miracle considering that tower was built in XVIII century.
Fortress had several reconstructions and upgrades. Last time it was reconstructed and renovated in XVIII century.
