Shemokmedi monastery

Monastery Shemokmedi in western Georgia can be found in Guria region, seven km from Ozurgeti. It was built on clifftop in Bjuji river canyon, in willage Shemokmedi.
Monastery consists of three parts:
Temple that was constructed in XII century,
Zarzma church. It is said that icon in this church is most ancient in Georgia. It was made in 886 year.
Third part is bell tower.
Inside and outside temple has stone finish and floor is made from marble.
Monastery had big library and manuscript storage. Most noticeable are ancient prayer books and life descriptions of the saints. Here you can also find paintings of the saints drawn in different art styles. This paintings are considered fine example of Georgian painter craftsmanship.
