Abastuman observatory

Abastuman Astrophysical Observatory is one of the most interesting sights of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.
In the 19th century, scientists who came here with a princely retinue found that the air in Abastumani is cleaner, which allows us to observe the stars without distortion. As it turned out later, the local air still has many useful properties due to which a resort was built in Abastumani.

Later in the 20th century an observatory was built here.

Telescopes of the Abastuma Observatory

The heart of the observatory are two telescopes.
Refractor telescope – in fact similar to a large telescope. The diameter of the main refractor lens installed in Abastumani 40 cm.
The drawback of such an optical scheme is the large size of the telescope.

The reflex telescope resembles a large tube from one end of which a mirror reflecting light is installed in the eyepiece. The mirror of the reflector telescope itself has a hole in the center. This scheme allows halving the length of the telescope. The mirror of a reflector telescope installed in Abastumani has a diameter of 125 cm.

Schedule

During the day you can see the buildings of the observatory from the inside and outside. Evening and night excursions also imply observation of the starry sky through a telescope.
